Curriculum vitae Dr. Wernik is a senior Clinical Psychologist and certified Sex Therapist. He is in private practice. His work experience includes directing the Misgav Ladach Hospital Sex Therapy Clinic in Jerusalem; heading a unit for autistic adolescents in a psychiatric hospital; staff and student psychologist in the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and group leader for bereaved parents of fallen soldiers. He served in the IDF as a mental health officer (Captain, res). Dr. Wernik is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (M.A. cum laude) and of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Psy.D). He is a founding member and former chairman of The Israeli Association of Sex Therapy. He has published in professional journals articles on sexuality, psychology of religion and creativity. He has published many articles in Israeli monthlies and weeklies. He is the founder and a member of "transtherapy" board of directors. His books in Hebrew include: Open-Minded Sex (Jerusalem: Keter Publishing, 1987); I Qohelet (Ecclesiastes) - Psychologist Philosopher Poet (Jerusalem: Carmel, 1998); Good Sex – Good Relationship (Tel Aviv: Prologue, 1998); Long Term Realationships (Ramat Gan: Focus, 2000); Where Does the Fish Pee From? (Ramat Gan: Focus, 2001); When the Going Gets Tough (Ramat Gan: Focus, 2001) and Mature Lovers Intimacy and Sexuality in the Later Years of Life (Tel Aviv: Modan-Eshel, 2002). Degrees, Titles and Licencing I have an undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology (see my curriculum vitae), and I have concluded my residency and internship requirements. I am listed in the Ministry of Health Registry of Psychology, and I am licensed as a clinical and medical psychologist, as well as a supervisor in these fields. I am a member in the corresponding sections of the IPA – Israeli Psychological Association. I am licensed to utilize hypnosis, and I am also a certified sex therapy (ISST – Israel Society of Sex Therapy). Clinical Psychologist? Therapist? Psychotherapist? Counselor? All terms mentioned above relate to conversations – to psychological or mental helping. The differences among them are not easily defined. A psychologist is a title defined by law. I am not overly enthused by “therapy” or “treatment” borrowed from the world of medicine. Thus, I prefer “clients” and “office” rather than “patients” or “clinic.” I am not treating. We are simply collaborating – talking, studying and working together. My life experience does influence my work, and yet every session is different and I am changing in it too. Services DeliveredIndividual (Therapy, Psychotherapy, Counseling) Sessions I work with adults, from their teens to old age (I do not work with children) on issues of transition, crisis, anxiety, depression, identity and meaning of life, in the domains of the individual, the couple and the family’ work and society. I have specialized in the areas of sexuality, bereavement and suffering. Couple Sessions I work with couples – friends, married or co-habitants, of same or different gender. Couples usually seek to solve a crisis, or to improve and maintain the relationship. Singles often come with issues of ambivalent feelings and dating difficulties. In our conversations, I am using a model described in my book Long Terms Relationships. If you read Hebrew, it is recommended to read it, before (or instead?) of our meeting. Couple and Individual Sex Therapy Sexual difficulties in functioning cab be described as – her, his and theirs. In any case, it is better to come to the first session as a couple. Frequent problems in therapy are: low desire or incapability, lubrication and erection difficulties; orgasm (fast or delayed ejaculation, pre orgasmic condition); painful intercourse, aversions and avoidances. “Therapy” is appropriately used here, as the therapist is usually active and directive, suggesting corrective assignments. Often there is a need to consult with expert gynecologists or urologists. Supervision and Consultation for Therapists I supervise individuals and groups of therapists – colleagues and trainees in the mental-health professions, in my areas of expertise. I also perform sessions of consultation with clients, or with clients and therapist together. I do not supervise, neither do I perform psychodiagnostics. Workshops, Training and Lectures I do workshops and lecture about the topics I have studied and wrote about, mainly on sexuality and relationships. I have led workshops in pre-retirement programs, and delivered opening lectures in conferences. Fees × Therapy or Supervision Session: $80 × Workshops, Training or Lectures: by prior agreement
